Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychological framework that helps us make sense of our behaviour and the patterns that show up in our personal and professional relationships. The TA framework includes the concept of drivers. Drivers are unconscious behavioural patterns that quietly influence, or motivate, how we think, act, and make decisions.
There are five behavioural drivers operating in the background shaping our responses to pressure, expectations, and change. When we 'obey' these drivers, we tend to meet challenges without difficulty and show off our positive attributes. However, when stressed, we can go overboard or not obey the driver, and slip into stress behaviour.
Although we experience each of these drivers at different times, there is usually one or more that shows up more often. By becoming aware of them, we gain valuable insight into why we do what we do, and how to respond with greater choice and self-compassion.
